We present the most sensitive and detailed view of the neutral hydrogen ( ${\rm H\small I}$ ) emission associated with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), through the combination of data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and Parkes (Murriyang), as part of the Galactic Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (GASKAP) pilot survey. These GASKAP-HI pilot observations, for the first time, reveal ${\rm H\small I}$ in the SMC on similar physical scales as other important tracers of the interstellar medium, such as molecular gas and dust. The resultant image cube possesses an rms noise level of 1.1 K ( $1.6\,\mathrm{mJy\ beam}^{-1}$ ) $\mathrm{per}\ 0.98\,\mathrm{km\ s}^{-1}$ spectral channel with an angular resolution of $30^{\prime\prime}$ ( ${\sim}10\,\mathrm{pc}$ ). We discuss the calibration scheme and the custom imaging pipeline that utilises a joint deconvolution approach, efficiently distributed across a computing cluster, to accurately recover the emission extending across the entire ${\sim}25\,\mathrm{deg}^2$ field-of-view. We provide an overview of the data products and characterise several aspects including the noise properties as a function of angular resolution and the represented spatial scales by deriving the global transfer function over the full spectral range. A preliminary spatial power spectrum analysis on individual spectral channels reveals that the power law nature of the density distribution extends down to scales of 10 pc. We highlight the scientific potential of these data by comparing the properties of an outflowing high-velocity cloud with previous ASKAP+Parkes ${\rm H\small I}$ test observations.

Objective:
To estimate population-based rates and to describe clinical characteristics of hospital-acquired (HA) influenza.
Design:Cross-sectional study.
Setting:US Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET) during 2011–2012 through 2018–2019 seasons.
Methods:Patients were identified through provider-initiated or facility-based testing. HA influenza was defined as a positive influenza test date and respiratory symptom onset >3 days after admission. Patients with positive test date >3 days after admission but missing respiratory symptom onset date were classified as possible HA influenza.
Results:Among 94,158 influenza-associated hospitalizations, 353 (0.4%) had HA influenza. The overall adjusted rate of HA influenza was 0.4 per 100,000 persons. Among HA influenza cases, 50.7% were 65 years of age or older, and 52.0% of children and 95.7% of adults had underlying conditions; 44.9% overall had received influenza vaccine prior to hospitalization. Overall, 34.5% of HA cases received ICU care during hospitalization, 19.8% required mechanical ventilation, and 6.7% died. After including possible HA cases, prevalence among all influenza-associated hospitalizations increased to 1.3% and the adjusted rate increased to 1.5 per 100,000 persons.
Conclusions:Over 8 seasons, rates of HA influenza were low but were likely underestimated because testing was not systematic. A high proportion of patients with HA influenza were unvaccinated and had severe outcomes. Annual influenza vaccination and implementation of robust hospital infection control measures may help to prevent HA influenza and its impacts on patient outcomes and the healthcare system.

There is no success without errors. Three keys to success are to learn from your errors, to learn from successful people, and to have mentors or role models whose advice and counsel you may follow to minimize errors. It takes more than knowledge and skill to develop a successful Cooperative Extension program. Programs need to be research-based, part of a team effort, and may involve using research and extension programs conducted and developed by others.
The best advice given to me on my first real job was, “The only way you’re not going to make mistakes is if you’re not doing your job” (Laubhan, 1972). Another quote from Henry Ford, “Theonly real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing,” added tomy philosophical base (Ford and Crowther, 1922). Without the wisdom conveyedby Laubhan and Ford, plus Oklahoma State University colleague Phil Kenkel’s (1990) famous quote, “How hard can it be?,” mine could have been just another mediocre career.
As a dairy and farm boy from Muskogee County, Oklahoma, with a new Ph.D. in agricultural economics, I set out to educate producers in the area of marketing and risk management. I noticed that attendance at meetings and workshops was good. Participants were interested and listened. They even triedsome of my ideas. Nearly all of them, if not all, reverted back to decisions and techniques they had used before my meetings or workshops.
Observant and inquisitive soul that I was, I conducted research to determine who was right. The results indicated that the producers were mostly right! If research-based information and education were to be transferred, and management practices were to be changed, either the subject matter and/or the method of delivery had to change.

Field experiments were conducted in 1996 and 1997 to evaluate the effects of six johnsongrass densities on picker- vs. stripper-harvest efficiency, fiber properties, loan rate, and lint yield loss of cotton. The weed densities employed were 0 (the check), 3, 4, 5, 8, and 15 plants/15 m of row. With three or fewer weeds in 1996 and four or fewer in 1997, harvest efficiencies were 4.9 to 7.6% higher for stripper- than for picker-harvested cotton. At four and higher weed densities in 1996 and at five and higher in 1997, differences in harvest efficiency between the two machines were not significant. For each weed per 15 m of row, stripper-harvest efficiency in 1996 and 1997 was reduced 0.3 and 0.6%, respectively; picker-harvest efficiency was not affected by the johnsongrass densities included herein. Fiber fineness (i.e., micronaire) was significantly reduced at densities of 8 weeds/15 m of row in 1997 and at 15 weeds in both years. A questionable increase in staple length was detected at the 3-weed density in 1996. Reductions in fiber strength were noted in 1997 at densities of 3, 8, and 15 weeds/15 m of row. No influences on fiber length uniformity were shown. In 1996 the loan rate for picker-harvested lint was 570 points/kg higher than for stripper-harvested lint at 8 weeds/15 m of row. In 1997 it was 741, 801, 1,058, 1,225, 1,074, and 1,329 points/kg higher at weed densities of 0, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 15 plants/15 m of row, respectively. In 1997 picker-harvest loan rate was reduced 49 points/kg of lint, and stripper-harvest loan rate was reduced 85 points. Over both years, picker-harvest lint yield was reduced 32 to 43 kg/ha (3.9 to 5.5%) for each weed per 15 m of row, and stripper-harvest lint yield was reduced 29 to 43 kg/ha (3.5 to 5.2%).

Responding to the needs of the feeder cattle industry, the USDA (1979) implemented a new feeder cattle grading system which broke from the traditional method of using consistent grade terminology throughout the marketing process. The terms Prime, Choice, Good, etc. were replaced by three frame sizes (large, medium, and small) and three thickness scores (1, 2, and 3). The change from carcass quality terms to production-oriented terminology was deemed necessary because the product characteristics desired by cattle feeders differ from those desired at slaughter by the slaughterer-packer.

Forage quality and quantity vary by species, time of year, level and time of fertilizer application and grazing system [6]. Livestock nutritional requirements change with age, rate of gain, weight, date of calving and percentage calf crop [7]. Pasture forage production and livestock forage requirements depicting both quality and quantity need to be compiled by calendar periods to determine optimal pasture programs and livestock systems.
Animal unit months (AUM) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) are the predominant measures of forage quantity produced and required. Neither measurement adequately reflects quality and quantity in forage production and beef requirements throughout the production cycles.

The focus of the typical Ph.D. program in agricultural economics is on research. Little emphasis is placed on teaching, and, in most cases, there is no emphasis on extension, thus placing the new extension specialist in a difficult starting position. Even so, the current order or priorities may be appropriate, because an extension specialist must first understand economic theory and then be a capable researcher and teacher to work effectively in an extension program (Hildreth and Armbruster, p. 857).

Decision makers, comparing production alternatives and faced with risk, normally utilize a large amount of information from many sources. To compare alternatives, information must be organized and net returns calculated. Techniques producing single value estimates, such as partial budgeting, do not adequately utilize available information, produce enough information to facilitate an adequate comparison of alternatives, or account for risk and uncertainty. Furthermore, single value techniques fail to take into account skewed probability distributions of various alternative outcomes. Decision makers need methods to analyze data when making specific recurring short-run decisions in a risky and uncertain environment.

The Risk-Rating Model is designed to give extension specialists, teachers, and producers a method to analyze production, marketing, and financial risks. These risks may be analyzed either individually or simultaneously. The risk associated with each enterprise, for all combinations of enterprises, and for any combination of marketing strategies is estimated. Optimistic, expected, and pessimistic returns above variable cost and/or total cost are presented in the results. The probability that total return will be equal to or greater than variable cost and/or total cost is also estimated.

Aggregate data are commonly used to determine returns to storage. However, recent studies have shown that aggregating data may lead to underestimated returns. This article compares aggregate and elevator data from Oklahoma to determine if aggregate data underestimate returns. We find no difference between the mean returns estimated with aggregate data and the mean returns estimated with transaction level data from grain elevators in Oklahoma.

We have investigated 136 Chandra extragalactic sources without broad emission lines, including 93 NELG and 43 ALG. Based on $f_X/f_O$, $L_X$, X-ray spectral hardness and optical emission line diagnostics, we have conservatively classified 36 normal galaxies (20 spirals and 16 ellipticals) and 71 AGNs. Their redshift ranges from 0.01 to 1.2, while normal galaxies are at z=0.01–0.3. Our sample galaxies appear to share similar characteristics with local galaxies in terms of X-ray luminosities and spectral properties, as expected from the X-ray binary populations and the hot ISM. In conjunction with normal galaxies found in other surveys, we found no statistically significant evolution in $L_X/L_B$, within the limited z range ($<$0.1). We have built our log(N)-log(S) relationship of normal galaxies in the flux range, $f_X$ (0.5–8.0) = $10^{-15}$–$10^{-13}$ erg sec$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, after correcting completeness by a series of simulations. The best-fit slope is −1.5 for both soft (0.5–2.0 KeV) and broad (0.5–8.0 KeV) energy bands, which is considerably steeper than that of AGN-dominated cosmic background sources at faint fluxes, but slightly flatter than the previous estimate, indicating normal galaxies will exceed in number over the AGN population at $f_X<10^{-18}$ erg sec$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$.

Migration-Enhanced Epitaxy (MEE) has been successfully employed to grow epitaxial films of the ternary compound CuInSe2 on (001) GaAs that are ordered in a CuAu crystallographic structure rather than the compound's equilibrium chalcopyrite structure. Evidence for this structural polytype is provided by XRD, TEM–TED, and Raman scattering data. Film growth under the conditions employed for this study occurs in a Stranski-Krastanov mode. The effects of growth system parameters and overall stoichiometry on 3–D island formation are described, including our observation that ordering of those islands into quasiperiodic self-assembled arrays occurs only in the case of nonstoichiometric copper excess.

A robust 6" hotwall flatzone nitride system is developed for scaled ONO interpoly. dielectric application in a high density EPROM memory cell. This system is designed to operate at low temperature (660° C) and gas ratio (4:1 NH3: DCS) with integrated silicon carbide components. The obtained key features are low defects (0.25 #/cm2 particles), smooth topography (measured by atomic force microscopy) and superior electrical interface as measured by electrical and optical methods.
